Oil leaking into water

I have a fairly serious oil leak that is dumping oil into the bilge. It is coming from the front of the engine somewhere that I have yet to identify. Today I noticed that I could see the rainbows of oil behind the boat while idling in the water. Could the oil in my bilge be somehow leaking out or could that be some type of gear oil leaking from the freshly rebuilt outdrive? Thanks.

Oil is not getting out if water is not comming in. Could be your outdrive leaking. Did they pressure check and vacumn check you outdrive after rebuild ?

Check the oil level in the engine, make sure it looks like oil and not a milkshake.

I am not sure if they pressure tested those or not. Is there some way I could do that or would you need special tools? The oil looks good. It is all brand new. It leaks so much I have to put about a quart in every time I run it. There doesn't seem to be any water in the oil or anything. The leak appears to get substantially faster when under load; I can't see it leaking when idling.

I once had a rust hole in my oil filter. It leaked oil into the bilge. Is it possible yours has one as well? Also, my 4.3LX has a stamped steel timing chain cover and oil pan. I am waiting for those to rust through!<br /> <br />How about a leak in the front and rear crankshaft seal? That way you could get oil into your bilge and into the outdrive bellows, at the same time. Maybe some of the bellow's oil could find its way into the water.

Need to know what year and model engine.<br />If it's an older engine you might want to check the gasket on the oil pump.

If you are dumping 1 qt. every time out it might be best to take the boat out of the water and find the leak on land with muffs. You will be able to dry the bilge and watch for the drip spot.

It's in my sig. 1992 3.0L. I just changed the oil filter so that is not the problem. I am going to try running the boat with muffs to see if I can find where it's coming from.

You may want to pull the oil filter back off and make sure you didn't double o-ring it,by leaving the o-ring from the old oil filter on the block.

A Quart per Trip..............<br />That's a Gusher that shouldn't be very hard to find..................

You would think so, wouldn't you? The problem is that it does not seem to leak when I am out of the water. I am thinking the leak must happen mainly when under load and at higher RPM because I can't seem to find a leak on land. Is it bad for the boat to rev it up to where I normally hit WOT while hooked to muffs? Thanks.

Yea,<br />You really Don't want to do that.............<br />Without having the Load on the engine, <br />It's Not the Same Anyway.......<br /><br />Have Someone Else Drive the boat,<br />While You look for the Leak............. ;)

That sounds like a plan. Just need to find some water calm enough where I don't get killed bouncing around on the floor...

ok here are my 2 cents:<br /><br />1. Check main seal behind harmonic ballancer<br />2. Check timing chain cover and gasket<br />3. Check oil pan gasket<br /><br /><br />Good luck

Re: Oil leaking into water

Sounds like the oil may be splashing out, i.e. hole in oil pan above the fill line and mid to WOT creates enough churning action to splash it out. Just went through that on my 3.0 battery sits so close to the oil pan that the battery acid ate it away. Was a bugger to find.<br /><br />Another thought, check the oilpan gasket and bolts. Should be easy to trace the leak, find the wet spot on the block/oilpan and go up until its dry. Thats where the leak is.

Re: Oil leaking into water

Well, I found the source of the oil leaking into the water, and possibly the oil leak in the motor as well. The oil leaking into the water is actually coming from one of the hydraulic lines on the outdrive which has developed a crack and is leaking. I am going ot be replacing the line tomorrow. It appears that the oil in the bilge is leaking from some type of a screw in "thingy", for lack of a better word, about an inch accross that is underneath the cylinder head on the passenger side of the motor. Can anyone identify this part for me? Thanks.

Be sure to check you pcv vent tube and make sure it isn't partial stopped up. it could be causing backpressure under a load and causing gaskets to leak.

Re: Oil leaking into water

It is on the passenger side, so it's not the oil pressure sending unit. It is a screw-in cylinder with a bolt in the end of it directly on the bottom of the cylinder head, not the side like the oil pressure sending unit. <br /><br />Where can I find that pcv vent tube to check it? Thanks.

Re: Oil leaking into water

The Only Thing "directly on the bottom of the cylinder head," is the Engine Block............<br /><br />And,<br />There are Only Water passages on the Port-side of the motor.......<br />Is it, by chance, the Valvecover leaking,+ running down onto the Manifold drain(I think it's what you're looking at)...........<br /><br />"Where can I find that pcv vent tube to check it? "<br />It's the Hole in the top of the Valvecover, with the Tube running to the Flame Arrester........
