1976 Evinrude 75 hp. Oil leaking out of rubber boot where gear change rod enters gearbox. Are there meant to be any seals where that shaft goes through to gear box? Or is there a common seal that dies in that area....water is getting into the gear box even though it's not much. Maybe the oil that is coming out is being pushed out by the water that is getting in somewhere?
I can't see anything obvious.
Thanks

Hi Faza....easiest way to find the bad seals is to drain the lower unit and put some air pressure in there. Then dump the whole thing in a tub of water. Where there's bubbles, there's leaks.

The shift rod seal is no biggie to change. Just an O'ring. But you will have to remove the cover from the top of the lower unit to get to it. It's also neccessary to pull the shift rod out which is threaded into the shift assemble in the lower unit. A word of caution. With the lower unit in neutral, measure the height of the shift rod for reinstallation. The are set at a certain high.

So...all you need is a cover gasket and o'ring. Be sure to grease up the o'ring before installation.

Keep us posted. Good Luck!
