i noticed on my 10hp and 25hp both 40 years different that both have an oil line going from the bottom crank shaft bearing to the top crankshaft bearing. of course the 10hp is metal and when evinrude got cheap they used rubber on the 199025hp. what's the line for? just lubrication or is it to keep the bottom crank space from overflowing or something?

Re: oil line

It takes oil that has settled in the bottom area and moves it up to lubricate the upper main bearing. So it's "just" for lubrication, as you suggested. "Just", suggests it isn't important though----(it is).

Re: oil line

My 1999 Yamaha 90HP has about 5 of these rubber oil "recirculation" hoses running from various places on the motor...I understand they move oil from a place where oil naturally accumulates to another place that wouldn't normally receive adequate lubrication. I've checked these rubber hoses for wear or cracking but they seem to be holding up fine...looks like they would be fairly easy to replace if and when the time comes. Good Luck!:)

Re: oil line

Years ago the only oil/fuel hoses we had were just black rubber and didn't hold up for a long time, but hoses now are made from much better polymer materials and seem to last much longer. My 1999 Yamaha still has all it's original gas and oil hoses, but I do check them regularly. The book says if one of your hoses splits or cracks, then it's time to replace them all with Marine Specified Hoses!....seems like good advice!;)
