Re: Oil Mix Ratio

Thanks Jimmbo, the FAQ's page here on iBoats says 1:40 for pre-1964, larger than 18hp. I had always though mine was 1:24, but I thought I'd ask.

I'd imagine you can you 1:40 or 1:50 if you use a good TC-W3 oil. I think those older engines required more oil because the oil was less effective then the oil today. I run my 1974 Evinrude 115 at 1:50 with no problems.

It's best to keep to a steady diet of 24:1 (not 1:24). Tops would be 32:1 with TCW-3. Mixes of 50:1 can be big trouble.

Re: Oil Mix Ratio

I just amended my post in the FAQ to clarify things, as it should have read pre-1960 is 24:1, not pre-1950. My apologies...<br />- Scott

Re: Oil Mix Ratio

1964 was the first year Evinrude and Johnson used 50:1. From about 1954 to 1963 the mix was 24:1 for most engines, with some smaller ones needing 16:1. Prior to the early 50s the mix was 16:1
