Oil mix w/built-in tank

I've gotten mixed answers to this question before (not from here thought). In past, I've used small boat with portable tank so I could put in gas, pour in oil and "shake" it. Mid-summer I bought an older 18' boat with built-in tank. I've been told its OK to add oil directly to tank. I've been pumping 6 gals gas, adding pint oil and so forth till tank is full. Someone said I should be filling portable tank, mixing oil and then pouring into boat tank. I tried lifting rear of trailer and shaking to mix without much luck ;) .

Thanks for any input on this!!!
BL...

Once you know the ratio say 50/1=1gal.oil/50galgas and so on therefore
128oz.oil/50gal.gas, if you do the math 1pt.oil,(16oz) for 6gal.of gas. you have to estimate how much gas you need, pour in the oil 1st, then add gas for a better mix. I do not like to fool with shaking and transferring fuel, It can be dangerous.
How big is the tank?

The only addition I'd make to the above excellent advice would be to add one of those fuel stabilisers to the inboard tank. You know the ones, they prevent the oil seperating from the fuel when a boat with an inbuilt tank sits on the driveway over winter. This may prevent some problems down the way a bit.
Good luck
Ross

I have a two stroke on my 17" Runabout. Mine's trailered, not sure about yours. I fill it up with gas, find out how much fuel I put in, then add the appropriate amount of oil.

I figure that the oil and the gas get mixed when I'm driving it either home or to the ramp from there.

Don't worry about shaking it. Put the oil in first.

Re: Oil mix w/built-in tank

I had a Kenner center console with a buit in tank that I could see a fuel level in. I measured the tank and made some marks on the side that helped me estimate the amount of fuel I would need. I might need 14 gallons by my estimate and therefore I would add the oil for only 12 gallons of gas. Then add just 12 gallons and check the level. This worked well for me for 7 years.

I added the oil first then the gas.

Always better to have a litte more oil then not enough. Oil can foul your plugs, but should burn up your engine like the lack of it.

Re: Oil mix w/built-in tank

Thanks for feedback...I've been adding 6gals gas, pouring in 16oz of oil, then 6 more gals of gas and 16oz oil and so on until full. Then, prorating last addition of oil. I like idea better of getting low ballpark guess at fuel needs and adding that much oil first. Its a 20 to 24 gal tank I would guess. I can see fuel level in tank when I raise the battery hatch. I might mark it in 6 gal increments from the top.

Just glad to hear I don't need to do the portable tank thing. Sounded VERY messy and inconvinient, plus dangerous as mentioned.
Thanks!
BL...

If you can measure the demisions of the tank, you can calculate the capacity. Whether it be 20 or 24 gallons.

Had that thought (measuring tank) yesterday. It is basically a cube which is easily accessed from the lids on each side of the boat. Think I'll measure it and mark temporary with masking tape or something and then check my calculations till I'm sure of the calcs.

Thanks,
BL...

This works for me. I have a copy of this list laminated in my boat. I fill the gas tank leaving some room at the top and then add the appropriate oil.
Just my $0.02 worth

Wipper- Do you'r estimate 1st, then add gas, you will get a better mix.Nice Chart!!!
