I have a 2006 searay 185 with an alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive and a 4.3L engine. I hit a stump with the stern drive unit.
Repairs were extensive including replacement of the gimbal ring. During assy it was found the plug for the oil monitor was broken. Rather than replace the plastic piece they capped the holes disabling it. Also they did this for the spedo. (An exterior pickup was installed) I am not at all happy about this.
My question is how hard is it to install this plastic piece in the transom assy? Ie do you need to pull the engine again or do you need to pull the outdrive, gimbal housing etc.
Second question is how much do I care about this? I use to check this before every trip but how do I check the oil now and how often should this be done?

I would of hoped they would have called you and said we're capping off some of your important accessories you should have plus we're drilling new holes in the boat. What's done is done.

How hard it would be depends on the accessibility to behind the engine (starboard side) below the water intake fitting. You'll be pushing the oil fitting in from the outside of the boat and usually you don't need to disassemble the outside components. It will be tight and long tools should help aid installation. On the inside of the boat you will need to install the clip and that sometimes is not easy depending on room.

Here are your parts to make it right again.

You'll need to find out if they removed any of the oil check valve assembly on the bell housing or just plugged the oil hose. Valve assembly item # 32. OEM speedometer components: #24.

Good luck.:)

NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! At any level. To disable something as important as that is WRONG! Merc put the drive oil monitor bottle there for a very good reason. If they have done that, they need to make it right. If the repair was done under insurance, call the insurance company.... BTW, they didn't 'find' the fitting broken, they broke it....

another option instead of repair: my Gen 2 was one of the early ones that had no lube bottle. Rather than mess with the install of the Merc kit, I bought a kit off ebay that has a flex hose that feeds into the top level check plug.
I wouldn't go without the reservoir. These drives like to leak.
