First of all. Thanks to Rodbolt for his help along the way. I managed to get a brand new lower unit for my 1998 Yamaha 150 for $1100.00 and it shifts like a Dream.

Question is... The unit came pre filled with oil. Is this the correct oil to run it with or should it be drained and filled with something else? Any other break in stuff I need to know? never had a new one :p

Change it if it'd make you feel better. I used to work on Japaneese motorcycles and those were filled with fish oil as a preservative. They couldn't use petroleum because crankcases are ventilated and it could leak combustable fumes. I guess fish oil is safer. But gearcases are sealed units, so that's probably not required. I figure it this way, if you change it, you know what's in there. If not, you'll always wonder. ;)

They do come with 90 weight gear oil. I owned both Honda and Yamaha cycle dealerships and they all came with out oil in the cycles. That was part of the assembly and set up process to add the oil. Never saw the fish oil.
