Oil on Plugs

The motor is a well-running Force 90. It's not a real problem, but I am a little curious. Using the recommended plugs, a thin film of oil covers the heads after each use, although I would not call them "fouled." Is this a fairly common thing? (The same thing does not seem to happen with my Yamaha 6hp kicker.) The oil is a Pennzoil blend at a 50:1 ratio. Any suggestions?

Re: Oil on Plugs

This is normal,EBG. What you are seeing is unburnt mixture.Of course, you may be burning too rich, but on 2 cycle motors, it's best to be too rich, than too lean...."Too lean kills too cycle" :D It's best to see some, than to see none, because it indicates adequate lubrication. A dry plug tells you, you do not have enough lubrication, or it tells you nothing at all.
Older engine designs, like Force, and even many modern carbed 2 cycle outboards, are what wrenches classify as "dirty-runners". They can be smelled before they get there, and many times smoke more than would seem normal. But it is normal. You will need to change plugs more frequently,(80 hour intervals is reccommended), as this will eventually foul the plugs.
Also, I would decarb this motor just before plug change. What fouls plugs, also fouls ring lands. Not normally a problem, unless it is left to build-up. There are many types of decarb techniques, but the best I've found is a method described by a guy who's handle is "DUNK". ---Click here to link to decarb porcedure--
The next best (and next-to-easiest) method, is to buy a can of "ValvTecH" and, following the directions on the can, spray it directly into the carbs.
The easiest way, is to buy a bottle of seafoam or other decarb additive, but I don't like the way outboards I've had, run with that stuff in the gas.
