can ya have a pan explosion? yep.
usually the pan manages to stay in place but badly deformed. normally it launches the valve cover though

nice thing about it, the two I saw, the flame tends to put itself out.
whats funny is both were on cars. usually, if the system hasnt been monkeyed,the leaking diaphram makes the engine flood so it gets caught soon.
but rather than a compression test do a leakdown test. much more accuate and more needed for your issue.
