I am assembling my engine and ran into a question on the correct pan gaskets. This is the one piece gasket and one piece rear main seal engine. The description of the oil pan gasket for marine says it is heavy duty and thicker than the standard truck gasket. Not sure why it would be thicker but I think it is in the area of the front and rear curved sealing surfaces. I bought a new oil pan that is supposed to be a marine oil pan. So, do I need the thicker gasket for the marine oil pan? If so, does the thicker gasket need slightly longer oil pan bolts?

Thanks....

No, the 1 piece gasket will work just fine, just use a quality sealant and install the bolts correctly

It's worth replacing the standard steel screws with stainless.

the motor in your boat came from GM with the same parts-bin gaskets that went on truck motors in 1996. I believe it was Mahle supplying the gaskets to GM at the time

However 1996 was a transition year. you may have a 1995 motor in your boat (need to look at casting number of block and heads, or count the intake bolts - 12 bolts is a 1995 motor, 8 bolts is a 1996 motor). however the block pan rails are the same

someone telling you a marine gasket is thicker is feeding you a line of carp to pay a higher price.

buy a good quality gasket. Felpro makes really good gaskets.

the gasket that Rick linked to is the same as the Felpro automotive gasket...... for a bit more money https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-os34500r

the perma-seal line from felpro is slightly thicker than the stock Mahle gasket, however that is the perma-seal trademark. it still squishes down to the same dimension, just with a slightly different gasket squish.

I'd swear I saw a specification difference on thickness. The standard gasket is .094 thick, if I remember right. Now I can't locate anywhere where I saw that spec.... guess I need to start on margarita earlier in the day. I can see how punching the automotive and marine versions out of the same material would make most sense. Really just the head gaskets that need to be 'marine'. Especially since the only diff in pans might be which side the dipstick is on.
