My oil pressure alarm comes on after high speed run and back to idle. Oil pressure gage shows 1/2 way between 0 and 20 psi mark so I assume around 10 psi. Rotella 15W40 about 20 hours ago.

Had to remove motor as I couldn't align engine and new rear mounts are even lower, another story. I hooked up an oil pressure tester, Harbor Freight, and measure 35 psi at switch and gage sender ports while cranking with plugs removed. Dash gage showed 20 psi during testing switch port, so 15 psi difference.

I think it is a low hour motor based on tear down I did last year and water pump impellor housing, etc. If I try a second tester with same 35 psi results would that be OK? I assume pressure will be around 15 psi hot at low idle, 600 rpm on tach, after hard run and come back to over 30 when oil cools a bit as I see 20 on gage then. Now is the time to replace oil pump easily but don't want to if I don't have to. Seems strange that both gage and idiot alarm would be bad but I did put new aftermarket sensors on. Charter boat I was on had 40 psi at idle with 3000 hour Crusader motor. Would you replace the oil pump or is 35 psi cranking cold engine pretty good? What oil pump? I have seen the Melling M55 I think for cheap. Is that a good one with standard flow or high flow?

Thanks.

could you have gotten a piece of teflon tape in the tee they both plug into?

yeah, try another mechanical gauge... Harbor Freight wouldn't be my first choice for buying a bourdon tube gauge, unless I had a second gauge to verify it against... always nice to have two.

I know a lot of folks use the 15W40 with success, but it isn't what Merc recommends for your engine... try 25W40 oil.
I never put anything that starts with a number lower than 20 in a boat engine sans oil cooler.
