5.0 lx 1992 Mercruiser A1

1. Oil Gauge has "L l l l H" (3 ticks between L and H. Where should this guage read most of the time. Mine is reading just below the 3rd tick at idle, and just above it at 2000-2200 RPM....

2. Temp Guage has "C l l l H" (again 3 ticks between C and H this time) Where should this guage read? Mine runs right at the first tick while on muffs for about 15 minutes, not much fluctuation.

3. Where should this engine idle: Mine idles right at 1000 RPM's....

4. Last one. Running on muffs, after warming up at 1000 rpm (idle) I increase the RPM's to 2000-2500 then quickly back down to idle. The engine tries and sometimes does stall. What could this be?

Thank you guys, I hope to get the boat out for the kids ext weekend.

Re: Oil pressure and Engine Temp readings....

You have really 2 options. Get a matched gauge and sender for each that has actual numbers, or get a mechanical oil pressure gauge and hook it up and see what the actual pressure is for the marks on your gauge.
Same with the temp gauge. Get one of those laser pointer guns and check the temp on the intake manifold right next to the temp sender. Then you will know for sure what the gauges are reading.
Idle should be 650-700 in gear.

When was the last time your engine had a full tuneup?

Re: Oil pressure and Engine Temp readings....

I just completed changing the plugs and wires. That made a huge difference from the last time I ran it on muffs. The fuel filter/seperator is probably two years old so I plan on changin that tomorrow.

Remember on muffs it will idle high...no back pressure.

Thanks Gary,
If it still idles high in the wter, is there a correct way to adjust this?

Also, I keep hearing ....should idle in gear, should I check the idle in gear of just sitting.

#4 could be a loose nut behind the helm :)

Bad gas won't combust as well as fresh gas, resulting in very poor performance.

As for #4 above... is your drive tilted fully up or fully down when doing that procedure?

KRS,
This procedure is done in the drivway on muffs. Drivee is 80% down.
