Last fall I had a muskrat chew through the wire harness on my pontoon boat. The easiest way for my local repair shop to fix this was to cut out the bad part and splice it back together (versus replacing the harness). After the repair, everything appeared to run just fine.
Fast forward to this spring (winterized it and replaced the oil in the fall) and after only a few hours in the water, my 2013 Mercury 115EF1 4 Stroke gave the "six beeps" warning and it didn't accelerate. Thinking it was a sensor, I took it to the shop for repair and turns out the oil pressure as at zero, the motor was knocking like crazy and it needed the powerhead remanufactured (about 1050 hours on it).
I realize lots of things can cause oil problems, but I am wondering if there is a wiring issue that could have cause the problem (ie - wires shorted together negating a control safety feature or sensor - or anything else)?
I am getting ready to replace with a new motor on the pontoon boat but not the wire harness - would hate to repeat the problem.
Of course the repair shop won't be anxious to admit to a wiring mistake causing a motor problem, so I appreciate any input or test we can run. I am not looking to punish anyone, just want to make sure I don't repeat the mistake.
