oil puddles

hello
after removing the airbox on over 30 merc/yamaha efi200/225 I cannot help but notice every one had a puddle of oil standing in the throttle bore. it seems the oil vapors from the crankcase are escaping past the baffle and entering the airbox to recondense in the throttle bores. is anyone else seeing this and what do you think would be a cure. both the yam factory techs I talked to say they have never heard of it. but every time I do the regulator or floppy bushing update I see this.
good luck and keep posting

Re: oil puddles

I see it on more than half the 225's that I service, especially now since the airbox has to come off for the sticking throttle recall repair. Most are from offshore boats and not the flats boats. My guess is the fuel diluted oil from hours of trolling, raises the oil level and gets into the PCV hose and into the bottom of the air box when the motor revs up for hours on the ride home.

Yamaha, like many foreign companies, deny a problem or say they've never seen it before, then all of a sudden, they come out with a fix or an engineering change. Not picking on Yamaha, but Volvo, Sharp, Panasonic, and others have done the same. If you ask them a question about something, the answer is "Why you want to know?"

The sticking throttles were an example, for over a year the factory line was "Gee, we haven't see that before, must be salt water getting under the hood". Now they have a fix, but it took almost 2 seasons before it came about.

OK, Rodbolt, you got me this time, I haven't had any seal problems with the SX's or the OMC Cobra SX's yet. What is going on?

Re: oil puddles

seahorse
its just a problem with the Volvo SX not the cobra version. all the ones that the bearing carrier threads in the housing and the seal loads from the fwd end. the rubber part of the seal becomes unbonded from the steel backing. the rubber then rotates with the propshaft. this problem has been eating drives since 1998. I have repeatedly asked at the volvo drive and EFI schools I attend what the problem is. they say its a supplier problem and its all fixed but the seals keep failing., so far volvo has given my cousin 3 drives but now they say no more. I told him if it happens again and they wont fix the problem he will need to call his attorney in. and that is bad news for all. but I have 7 or 8 customers that have had repeated seal failures with the SX prop shaft seal. I now use omc adhesive M to help glue the rubber to the steel backing. let me know if you hear of this problem.
good luck and keep posting.
ps I guess I shoulda started a SX thread :)

seahorse
hey let me know if its the same problem I have been fighting. the seal will look fine it is just no longer attached to the steel backing and the rubber rotates with the propshaft.
good luck and remember to remove that tiny 3/8 hex lock bolt on the bearing carrier.
and you dont have to remove the unit to replace the seal just remove the bearing carrier.

Re: oil puddles

It's on a 27' 4-Winns 1997. The stb. side seal spins with the shaft. The port side seal leaks slowly, but does not spin. Waiting on customer approval.
