Oil Pump Question please

Hi,

I always check the oil gauge & temp Gauge while driving the boat. At the end of the day, I noticed when I put the boat in Neutral, The gauge needle went into the "RED ZONE" near 0

When I put it into gear, it increased back to normal. I drove back to the dock and let it cool down, When I started it back up, (30 mins later) It read in the NORMAL RANGE.

Question: How can I tell if the oil pump is going bad or if its the gauge? The boat is 19 years old.

Couple of things...Buy a manual gage and install it to check pressure.

To check your current gage...Disconnect the wire on the sending unit and put it to a known ground. It should read FULL SCALE!! With the key on.

Hi Trent,

Question: Do oil pumps start to go like that ( Pressure drops then goes up again) or do they just stop working?

Sounds to me that the gauge is working perfectly...check out anyways. As the motor heats up the oil gets thinner. Then you go to neutral and it shows low oil pressure; oil is still hot and rpm's are down. If you increase rpm's by putting in Forward, I assume that oil pressure goes up? When you let motor cool off the oil viscosity increases again and pressure looks good. Sounds to me like the pump is OK and the bearings in the motor a gone. I'm sure you'll get more thoughts. :(

When was the last oil change? If you are "throttling up" and the guage indicates a drop check the oil leval too. If the guage has an electronic sending unit it is no more than a glorified light. If it is a mechanical guage then you can normally expect an accurate response. The possibility of the guage going also exsists.

Best part is that you are paying attention now.

Bob ;)

On my old Chris Craft, the manual says oil pressure of about 10psi is normal when the engine is hot and at idle -- pretty low.

I found after changing the oil that the pressure stayed up better at all running speeds. But your reading might very well be normal.

Re: Oil Pump Question please

Hi Guys,

Well, the oil was changed in April and it's still a beautiful golden color. I did drive the boat for about an hour when I decided to stop and fish. It was at that point that I noticed that the presure dropped near the RED ZONE at Idle. I then paniced and headed home. As soon as It went into gear, the presure increased as I gained speed. When the engine cooled down, it started with a high presure. Is this normal? Someone said bearings might be gone?? How would I test that??

Thanks again,
Lou
