Re: Oil pump
Thanks guys. The local shop said for him to fix the one cylinder and the oiler about 1700 to 1800. About 3000 + labor to do a power head with warrenty. What should i do. All the other holes have 110 psi well the one on top right (1) has 95 psi. Should i do a whole rebuild or one possable two hole rebuild or look for a power head. Im going to pull the head on #2 and look at the cylinder walls. Can these be honed or does this have to go to a bore shop
The first thing you need to do is make a logical decision and try to avoid the emotional aspect.
If you have the money to spend on a powerhead rebuild the price you are being quoted is respectable.
The option of boring one hole, cleaning the rest up and putting it back together is viable but when you compare a repaired engine to a virtually new engine with a full rebuild the cost is not effective.
You didn't say what you paid for your engine. Buying another engine will feel like a crap shoot to you and parting out your current engine to recoup the loss is a lot of work.
Still, a newer engine in great condition can be had reasonably if you can shop it locally. The drawback is that you would have a virtually new engine with a total rebuild whereas any motor you find is going to be in used condition and will need a rebuild sooner than your motor with a fresh rebuild.
Confusing and difficult decisions, I know.
How would I go? I would have my mechanic evaluate all the components of the motor, including the lower/unit and then, if that was all good I would proceed with the full rebuild.
If the evaluation was not good, I would part the motor out and have him look for another motor for me. Odds are he knows someone that he might be able to swoon into a new motor if they could get a decent trade in value for their current motor. Your his bank on this so he has the incetinve to work harder to get a deal done.
If you work the angles you might be able to turn this misfortune into an opportunity.
