oil quality / consumption

I've changed the oil and filter on my volvo 940 turbo st wagon myselves for the last year. The car has done 150000 miles, mostly on highway, we are allowed to go 85 MPH and I always do. Manual says to change oil and filter every 10000 Miles and Shop always used a standard oil. It normally burns 1/5 to 3/4 liter of oil between changes. First time I changed it I used a BILTEMA ( our NAPA kind of store ) semisyntetic. Next change Penzoil syntetic and I observed less consumption. Last 10000 miles was with Mobil 1 syntetic on Lubedudes advice. Now I suddenly had next to none Oil consumption. Did any of you experience anything similar. The oil is still clean and light brown, doesnt look worn at all. Does oil difference really mean that much.

ooooh, G Dane, you've started another good one now. :D

I drive an overloaded Ford e150 cargo van w/ 4.6 liter OHC with 186K on it. I've used 0w-30 synthetic since it was broken in at about 5k mi. My engine uses one quart of oil each 4.5 to 5k miles. I use a supplemental by-pass filter which I change, along with the OEM filter, every 25000 mi. I HAVE NEVER CHANGED THE OIL!!!! I simply add two new quarts at each filter change and that motor runs like the proverbial Swiss Watch.

Now that's my opinion! ;)

G Dane, I have had similar experience with a Ford Expedition. Use to burn a qrt of oil every 2500 miles, now I have been using Mobile ONE synthetic and the truck doesn't need any oil added between 6000 mile oil changes.

It wasn't instantenous so I didn't even notice at first. It took maybe a couple of changes or 12,000 miles. I think Lubedude predicted this in one of the oil posts when responding to someone who said that synthetic causes you to burn more oil.

That's my experience.

Let it be said, luby does know a thing or two about oils :D
All jokes aside, i took LD's advice on changing to synthetic oil quite a while back and i have no regrets.

GD,I would double check what is stated in your manual. If it states 10,000 mile between oil changes..then what it means is ,that is the minimum care you must take to keep up with the manu warranty(when you had one).I would NEVER drive 10k between changes..NEVER. though if you have had yours since new,it sounds like your car doesent like fresh oil anyway.Charlie

I've had it since new, and 15000 KM which is 9375 miles is what the manual says. Its due for a change now, and oil looks almost like new, only a tad darker. All new VW's over here are advised to get oil changed every 30000 KM which is 18750 miles. Same for many other brands, like Toyota, GM ( Opel ) Nissan Etc. Looks like kind of competition of keeping them away from the shops. I just guessed the manufacturers must know. Its true, manual states that under tough conditions, like lots of mountain driving or towing, oil should be changed more often. I just didnt consider going 85 MHP constant speed with a car that has a top speed of 132 MPH was tough, doesnt feel that way, 2800 RPM and light throttle. Do you think I should change it more often ?? Wouldnt mean that much.

Now Boomyal, you know better than that, how do you expect the oil companies to make a living when ya cheat em like that???

I had no Idea I had that much of an effect on you guys! Honestly, 10,000 miles is basically nothing to a good running engine with a good synthetic oil.
