I sure dont want to start a war or beat a dead horse. But I recall from the early 60's. that OMC issued a service bulletin stating , All Omc outboards manufactured to date, should run on a 50:1 mixture. if using ashless TCW rated lube. We no longer dumped a quart of 30 wt non detergent into the tank but used a product with better lubricating properties and cleaner burning. If I am way of base let me know, but also remember all that unburned oil spitting out the exhaust. Bill

Re: oil ratios

Again OMC issued a service bulletin Stating :all of our engines should now use tcw oils at 50:1 . I am surly not the only person here who is old enough to recall that. I dont care what your owners manual says. they also tried 100:1 in the 80's and that did not work. so a bulletin was issued.

I have the Johnson literature. But I don't want to get into the gas squabble. Besides, who is to guarantee that the TC-W3 of today is the same as the TC-W of the 1960s? Better? Worse? I dunno.

This horse has been beat to death. Do a search on this forum and you will see the many debates that have occurred. The best advice would be to follow the manufacturers current reccomendations. If you decide to mix differently, that is your own risk, and to each their own humble opinion.

Frankly, you can do whatever you wish with your older johnnyrudes. The word from OMC was to use 24:1 on those 1950's outboards and 20:1 for the earlier ones. For the really old ones, 16:1 and even 12:1 is appropriate.

It's your outboard, though. Do whatever you want. But...please don't tell others what they should do with theirs. The original information on the 50s johnnyrudes is 24:1. I can guarantee that's safe. 50:1 might be safe on some, but I sure wouldn't advise it. And, I'm sure, owners of these vintage outboards won't appreciate it being advised when their plain bearings fail.

Do what you want with yours. Leave the decision to not follow the manufacturer's recommendations to others to decide. You'll find many here who recommend 24:1 for all engines that originally used that ratio. I'm among them. Oil's cheap. Rebuilds aren't, if they're even possible on some models.

Re: oil ratios

WBeaton gave you the scoop. For someone who claims not to want to start a fight you sure are trying to start a fight. You got your answer but refuse to accept it.

OMC said, in 1964, to use 24:1 in ALL engines made before 1964 and 50:1 in all engines thereafter. There have been a few YABUTs since, but none mentioned what oil is involved, as they all assumed whatever TC-W oil was current at the time.

50 year old OMC engines need 24:1 using TC-W3. That includes 1958 engines.

Re: oil ratios

On my 1960 original Johnson tank who came with the 1960 Johnson 40hp motor states :

,,Mix one quart of oil with full tank of gasoline, one third pint per gallon of gasoline.
Use regular gasoline or marine white gasoline.
We recomend outboard oil SAE30 regular automotive oil.
Avoid use of low priced third grade ML oils.
capacity 6US gallons , 5 imperial gallons.
Manufactured by Outboard marine Corporation
1960 "

This is word by word what is writen on the gas tank.
So I suppose is 25:1 ?
