I ma having trouble with my oilreservoir. After runnnig the engine, I found a lrge 2 cycle oil spot underneath my drain plug opening. Upon inverstigting the source, I found the oil coming out of thtop ov the reservoir tank, in between the sending unit housing and the tank. I removed the sending unit, cleaned the gasket and tank well, and replaced it. However it's still leaking from that spot. The oil is not coming out of the tank, rather it seems as if it back flosing from the line as the level in the tank isn't decreasing much. Also, there is a small priner bulb on this oil line that is as hard as a rock. Anyone know what is causing this?

Re: Oil reservoir

Actually, could this be a VRO problem? The valve in the VRO may be bad allowing the oil and some fuel to bleed back into the tank, as the enigne is knocking a little at high RPM, and the oil reservoir has a gasoline smell to it. I plan to mix the oil directly with the gas and run it to see if the engine quiets down, which would indicate to me that the proper amount of oil is not reaching the top cylinder. Possible?

The bulb itself should not allow back-flow...
Marinemech1 has some good advice there..

David, see if you can get one of the moderators to close your other post as its all the same. It'll just be easier to follow.

Re: Oil reservoir

There needs to be clarification about the sending unit. The unit in the reservoir tank is not a true sending unit persay. All it does is have a float on it that determines oil level and sends a sginal for the alarm to go off when the oil is low...it is basically just a pick up point for the oil. The oil is picked up via vacuum off the engine, which makes solving the problem even more perplexing. Any further thoughts?

Also, I have been asked by the moderator to include this question from the ohter post.

The top cylinder (#1) is tapping a little at high RPM (under load...not on thr trailer) and 2 cylce oil appears to be flowing back into the reservoir, leaking out bewteen the sending unit and tank and flowing into the bilge. VRO problem? Upon repair will the tapping stop? Has major damage occured to the power head?

Re: Oil reservoir

The tapping may or may not be related. Has the hot horn ever went off? What spark plugs are you using?

Thanks for responding Dhadley.

The high temp horn has has not sounded. Water spray is normal to luke warm under load and spraying about 8 to 10 feet back. Guage is in the green. Rubber O-rings underneath head were changed out about 6 months ago.

Spark plugs - Champion QL78YC
