oil/residue leak from exhast???? I need decarb instruction to thanks

I have an 1973 850 merc had it on the water today when i took it out i noticed a black oily lookin substance was coming out of the two exhaust on the back of motor facing the motor from back of boat it would be the port on the left. Anyone know what this could be and could this be a prob??? My guess it is just carbon

You're using cheap rubbish oil in the fuel... Get a decent quality oil and the problem will go away...

I beleive I used penzoil from wal mart is that not a good brand?what do you recomend using? I would like to use the best

When I owner a shop (back about 15 years ago) one of the local magazines happen to do a big trial on all the different oils and all the different engines.

Long story short, they recommended the Quicksilver brand for being the cleanest burning and the one that had the best fuel consumption.

Another curiosity was that one of our customers was a guy who owned the local Shell petrol station... One day I noticed hm buying Quicksilver oil... I asked him why, as I was sure he'd get the Shell brand a lot cheaper.... He said he'd 'never put that s..t in his engine'...
