Oil Sensor??? Beep Beep Beep

Running on Lake O last week when Beep Beep Beep sounded.

Top resovior is fine as well as lower unit. Checked Cap Sensor with Ohm meter and it works correctly. No reading when float at top. Full reading when cap is at bottom of stem.

I think the oil pump is OK as when engine is running I crack the cap on the top and oil flow out. After tracing wires I see that one goes to the front of the engine with a red LED on it and it also has a wire going to the bottom of the fuel filer. The other sensor box is located towards the rear.

Any ideas???? I premixed oil just in case and it seemed to run ok all day, as I had a tourney!

Any Ideas???

The wires to the red LED and the fuel filter is to detect water in the fuel. Was the LED on?
You also have a motion sensor in motor to detect of the oil pump is turning or not.
You can check the oil pump output buy disconnecting the output hose from he oil pump and plug the hose, then hook a clear hose to the oil pump and hold it up in the air. Since you are now using premix, start the engine and run it at about 1500 rpm and see if the pump is pumping oil.

Removing the cap and the raising of the oil level does not indicate the pump is working, it only indicates the reservoir is filling from the remote oil tank.

Thanks for the reply. I will try this. And to anwser your question, no the LED light is not on. I just have not replaced this in awhile and was woundering if this could cause the same beep sounds.

If your test works would you say that it is the sensor at that point?

The way I look at it is there are 3 parts. Float switch, oil pump, oil sensor.

Oh and the last item is OIL!!! I know I am good there and on the float switch.

Thanks

There is also an alarm module in the system that could be bad. The first thing you have to do is to determine if you actually have oil pumping into your fuel.

I removed the Oil Pump and pulled out the ceramic Housing that connects to the drive gear. I then put a put a socket wrench on the flywheel and turned it. The shaft however does not turn.

Please Advise

I don't think that is a valid way to test the oil pump. Listen to what DonS is telling you on how to check it. There is a sender/magnetic pickup on the oil pump that tells you when it is rotating. If it is not rotating, then you will have a beep beep. Disconnecting the wires from the sender is a better way to tell if that is the cause of the alarm.

If your motor is like the 1995 150HP I had, there's a plastic gear on the crankshaft the drives a shaft keyed to the oil pump. The gear is a common failure part, and when it does, the pump fails to operate properly. The best fix, if you want to retain the oil injection feature is an aftermarket electronic oil injection system, which uses a variable speed motor, controlled by tach pulses, to operate the oil pump. Check the driven shaft for black plastic shards, a sure sign of gear failure.

Re: Oil Sensor??? Beep Beep Beep

Being that when I turn the flywheel the oil pump shaft does not turn says that the gear is at fault. I will however put it pack together and try Don's final test of the output of the oil pump. If it is the gear itself what after market who you reccommend as replacing the gear requires that you tear apart the whole engine and I am not prepared to do that!!

Thanks

Re: Oil Sensor??? Beep Beep Beep

if the pump is off simply remove the drive shaft and inspect the drive gear with a flashlight.
lots of things can cause the oil alarm, but none connected with the remote tank nor the pump itself.
low engine tank level or defective engine tank sensor, bad rotational sensor,no rotation, bad switchbox, wiring or ign coil on the switchbox to alarm module or a defective alarm module.
all easy to test but you will need an anlog peak reading multi meter.
and a service manual :).
make sure you reasemble the ceramic sleeve correctly, some had a small magnet that would fall out if you were not looking, and sometimes even if you were.

Re: Oil Sensor??? Beep Beep Beep

Well Gentlemen, I pulled the shaft out and with it came 4-5 pieces of ground up plastic. The gears are like 2-3 sets of teeth moving in and out as I turn the flywheel. I think I may have lost a roll.

Soooooooo... If anyone knows of the third party part name that I can use it sure would help. I will try and find the one metioned above.

Now .. Should I leave the shaft out now as not to break off any more of the gears?

Thanks

OUCH!! That is bad news. Guess you either go with the electrical pump or premix. I don't have the time right now to look but somewhere in "My Favorites" I have a link to a shop which sells them. Thaere was a bunch of posts here and over on the Whaler board by a guy named RANDY who went through that and ended up with the electic replacements for twin engines. Maybe do a search.

I spoke to Bob at Marine Solutions and he used to be an engineer with Mercury and knows all about this. He retired and now has own small company selling these. Real nice guy and he said that if I have any problem to call him anytime including Weekends. Takes about a hour to install and comes with replacement spark plugs. The EFI version is 435.00 shipped overnight.

The system is easy to install, BUT read and follow the instructions very carefully.

and try to pluck out as many plastic shreds as you can, dunno how but occasionally they would wind up back in the reed box and make mischief.
