I called one dealer who said to put the whole 16 ounces in the standard gallon metal gas can. Doing the math, I think that is double the correct amount. 6 gallons is 384 ounces, and at 50:1 that would take 7.68 ounces.
My question, how can I be sure the 1998 90hp evenrude takes a 50:1 ration?

A 50:1 ratio would be 16oz oil to 6 gallons of gas. There are 8 pints in a gallon or 48 pints in 6 gallons. That would be one pint oil to 48 pints gas close enough to call 50:1. Your engine should run fine on that mix.

Thanks Gun Dog. I feel better about it now. I was just afraid too much oil would foul the plugs.
But, you confirmed what I've heard before.

Too much oil may foul the plugs, but plugs are still cheaper than engines.......;)

Six gallons at 128 ounces per gallon? Do the math again. Not 384. Make it simple. One gallon has 8 pints. six gallons have 48 pints. Put in one pint of oil to six gallons of gas and you have 48 to 1. Close enough to call it 50-1.
