I have searched and read oil threads until I'm so slick I can't even sit in the chair anymore.
But.... I stil don't find an answer I'm comfortable with.
The question is:
My owners manual calls for straight 30 weight oil to be used and I have used that for 13 seasons.
Now, I can't seem to find any straight 30 weight oil anywhere. Lots of multi-vis, but no straight weights.
Will 10W-30 be a good substitute for my use?
The boat probably gets no more than 20 hours of use per season and is seldom over 3000 RPM. The only real workout it ever gets is pulling tubers and skiers.
I'm located in central Iowa and the temperature is rarely over 90 degrees and I am even more rarely pulling anyone when the temperature is much over 90. :)

I believe mercruiser recomends 25W40 for a multi weight. I think 10W30 would be a bit light.
I get Diesel 30 weight at Napa or perhaps you could try a truck stop?

Are there any auto supply stores near you that can order 30W oil if they do not stock it?

I have seen straight 30W at 7-11 and at WalMart and Kmart.

Owner's manual oil recommendations are completely irrelevant, especially when it was written in 1993 and it is 10+ years later. Many things have changed.

Go with a 40 weight oil, straight 40 if available is ok unless you boat in weather < 60F in which case a multi-viscosity like 15w-40, 25w-40, or 10w-40 would be better.
Chevron delo 15w-40 or mobil delvac 15w-40 I think would be your best bet, should be available at any auto store including marine stores like west marine but you'll pay more there. A 10w-30 won't hurt, but might give you lower oil pressure at hot idle.

Here's a quick fyi on oil- today's oil is driven by the automotive market and the EPA and gov't pressure for fuel economy. There are formulated thinner to give better fuel economy and with less additives to reduce emissions and lengthen catalytic converter life. Proof of this is all the 5w-20 and 0w-20 oils you see on shelves and specified by new cars- ford/mazda, chrylser, honda. Not the greatest thing for a boat engine which is under a much heavier load all the time. This is the main reason you are unable to find straight 30 oils- not fuel efficient according to your gov't and the epa and they don't sell. Stick with diesel-rated oils if possible, will have a CH-4/CI-4+ rating on them in addition to SL or SM, they will offer the most protection unless you go with a boutique or name brand synthetic. Pennzoil 15w-40 is also usually available at places like walmart. Otherwise 10w-40 valvoline, havoline, mobil will all do just fine. Multi-visc oils are not bad for the simple reason technology and oil refining is much better today than it was back in the early 90's and 80's. They will not shear/oxidize/break down, or at least are much much less likely to. Opinions die hard which is why so many can't offer any helpful advice regarding lubrication.

Thanks for all the help.
I found 30 weight at a parts store.
They don't display it on the shelf, but had a supply in their back room. Evidently they don't get enough call for it to give it the shelf space.

I would stick with that. The multi-vis oils thin out too much, except for Merc's which is supposed to be different than a true multi vis. I use Chevron Delo 400 straight 30 wt, you can find it at West Marine. Another good heavy duty oil is Shell Rotella T. I have even been able to find straight 30 wt Pennzoil that I use in the lawnmower and other air-cooled power 4 cycle power equipment. That would also be fine for an inboard 4 cycle engine.

Wal-Mart SuperTech brand comes in straight 30. What about using 20W-50? I would imagine that has about the same viscosity as 30 weight.

20W50 is easy to find. It is very similar to 30 WT in viscosity. I think the additive packages in 20W50 oils would be a little more up to date than with straight 30. When I once went looking to see if there were any oils that DIDN'T display the API donut, straight 30 at Walmart was what I found, so i would side step that. Look for an API classification on the label. SI or SJ or newer means you have a pretty hi tech oil, better than any that was available on the market when your boat was built.
