i had my boat engine rebuilt about a year ago i just started it today for the first time since it was put back in the boat it ran good then and started today without any problems but i noticed that when i checked in the valve cover through breather holes and oil fill with my fingers it was all dry like no oil is getting up there but my oil pressure is fine. i ran it for about an hour or two and its runs fine oil is fine also any help would be greatley appreciated o the engine is a volvo penta aq271c {chevy 350 1992}

that's od, i was always under the assumption that if you took the fill cover off oil should splash out. Maybe you should try taking the valve covers off and seeing what the deal is. You should definately have oil in the heads. Your oil pressure is measured from the block so as long as it's circulating in there it will read fine. Maybe a little high if ther's nothing getting to the heads. Whenever i rebuild a motor i crank it over with no plugs untill i see oil comming up to the head. Then i start it.

I've never seen oil splash out of an oil fill, esp. at idle. Maybe it would if you left the cover off and ran hard, but I doubt you'll ever see it splashing about at idle. If you take a flashlight and watch through the fill hole, I'll bet you'll be able to see it flowing on the rockers...

You will not have an oil splash. Engines that do that are typically OHC engines.

Yeah I agree, over head cam engines sling it all over. Had a FORD 2.3 that I started with the valve cover off and what a mess.
