How can you tell if the oil is mixing with the gas or how does the oil system work? I have a 89 3 cyl 90hp mariner I got it off someone and It hasn't been started in 5 yrs. I have cleaned and checked all carbs spark plugs, pressure tested everything seems good. I need to know about making sure the oil is moving any ideas?

Re: oil

1st check oil levels, lids are tight,no leaks. When key is turned to on,you should hear a short beep. This tells you your oil warning system is working.Start engine and a light blueish smoke will confirm your getting oil.Id also squirt some outboard 2 stroke oil into each cylinder and rotate by hand before starting...just to loosen things up(rings etc).
Get a mercury Manual for your model and get to know your engine...priceless.

Re: oil

Cheap insurance, any suspicion of a possible oiling problem, pre-mix your fuel. Then you KNOW that your motor is safe.

Adding oil is required for break-in, so the added oil will not do any engine damage other than cause a little excess smoke.

And it sure eases your conscious until you verify your oiling system is working correctly.

Not sure about the beep thing, I have a 2000 Mercury 50hp and when I start the boat I don't hear a beep prior to starting it

Re: oil

I'd so as CharlieB recommends - run premix as well and monitor the auto oiling system.
Keep track of how many ounces of oil is used for a given number of gallons of fuel.
