The boat is a '83 Cheetah 180 with a 898 Mercruiser(305/v-8). Everytime after use I notice an oily residue on the back driver side of the boat. The exhaust manifold has just been replaced on that side (so I was told). Is this normal or am I experiencing some oil burning on those cylinders? I am very new to boating and just wanted to know if I have a potential serious problem. Thanks for any help.

Re: Oily residue on the back of boat

Your engine may be running to rich and producing black smoke. I am assuming you have a stern drive... anyways the exhaust exits the boat through the propeller and 2 holes on the sides of the upper part of the drive. If your engine is running rich a black residue will form around the drive or on the back side of your boat. have you noticed any black smoke coming out of your exhaust? If this is the case just take it over to a car or boat mechanic (be sure to bring your water muffs) and have them adjust the jets. If this isn't the case you may have a much more serious proplem on your hands.
