I have this starcraft that has the 165 hp mercruiser in it. It has been sitting for 20+ years, and i dont even know if it ran when the previous owner got it. i know he installed an outdrive, because the previous owner to him had it stolen as the boat sat.

so i was contemplating wether to use the inboard or tear it out and install and outboard bracket and outboard.( which i know a lot about)

but the cheapest way is to get this straight 6 running... ( i think)

so i wont know what works...( generator, water pump, impellar, starter ect ect.

I am guessing that i should clean everything up on the outside, change the oil, pop the head and inspect and lubricate the bores and pistons... and try to crank her over, and or break her free...

if i try to do this with a breaker bar, where is the best place to drive this engine?? the front of the crank?

should i first pull the outdrive?

which direction does it rotate ( standing in front of engine , looking at engine.)

Id appreciate the experience of the members here in helping lay out a general plan of attack , to see if the motor will run with out rebuilding the shortblock..

IF at all possible..

i am not againt taking all the peripherals off to check and or replace-rebuild...carb, alt, starter , and manifolds

what about the pump for the hydraulics on the outdrive...is that going to be a monster headache???

I know the gimble device has to come out because there are roots growing out of many of the openings!!!

I want to start to plan ahead now....depending on weather, i might start any weekend now...

or will it be easier to just pull the motor and try to figure its condition outside the boat? as opposed to inside the boat

thanks

Ayuh,.... It's a standard lefthanded motor, so standin' in front of it is Clockwise...

I'd pull the drive, pull the spark plugs, squirt in abit of oil, 'n Jumper a battery right to the stater to see if it turns over...

If it Does roll over,... Go ahead 'n pull it...
It's easier to work on, outa the boat...

there really isnt an easy way to get oil on the crankshaft and thus the rod and crank bearing, before i turn this thing over is there??

is it possible to drop the oil pan wher ethe motor sits in the boat??

its all covered right now( the whole boat)

You could pull the motor, then pull the distributor and use a priming shaft to manually spin the oil pump if you think there's not enough oil left in the bearing journals and heads. This will force oil throughout the engine, just as if it were running.

But, that's really overkill if you just want to see if it spins and makes compression. To do this, just as was stated above, pull the plugs and squirt/spray some oil in the cylinders. Then jumper the starter and spin it. The pistons are generally what leak the oil down to the pan the fastest. If you had a compression gauge, you could check all six cylinders like this (with the coil grounded and plug wires secured out of the way, of course).

if you really wanted to you could just prime the oil pump - that will deliver oil directly to the crankshaft journals first

you arent going to hurt anything by just turning the engine over with the starter

Just my opinion, but after 20 years, it's hard to say what you have in the oil pan. It could be a condensation mess.
I bought a boat that hadn't run in 5 or 6 years (in a wet climate) and the oil was a mess.
Pull the engine, pull the pan and see what it looks like before you do anything.

Ayuh,... I guess I should have clarified, 'n said to also make sure there's something resemblin' Oil in the pan, 'n at the right Level....

well, Ill pull the oil drain plug... is guess and see what comes out...then ill install fresh oil, Ill squirt oil in the plug holes and I will take the dist out and drive that pump a minute or two, before I try to turn the motor over...

my THOUGHT is, if there is any rust on the journals, id prefer to get it wet with oil rather than rotate dry!!

maybe it is even best to turn the oil pump and let it sit for a few days.....think that is over kill??

20 years!!!!!!

but people hit the lottery every day...maybe i can too. and this thing turns over..

Wow.....did you pull the motor already and leave is sitting in the yard, resting up against an old piece of plywood painted white?

Or...is that the motor as it sits in what sorta-resembles the engine area of a boat?

I wouldn't be crossing my fingers for much success after seeing how it's been left to the elements for so long! Good luck!

First I would apply weed killer. Then trim the hedges a bit. Bring in a landscaper to cut the trees back a bit and T-H-E-N pull the motor and check to see if you have anything resembling oil in the pan. I had an engine sit for 9 years and it was ugly, I don't want to think about 20 years. Hope you win the lottery... you never know, somebody has to win!

that it chear me up!!, thats the motor IN THE BOAT, when i first got her....she was covered for most of the first part of the 20 years, but at some point the tarp rotted away.

on the outside the motor doesnt look that bad...it isnt a bucket of rust, but i figure it does not take much to ruin rd and crank bearings...r to bust a rusted ring frozen to the bore...

yeah i think I am going to rethink trying to start this motor...the bottom half of the oil dipstick was rusted away and gone..The ears on the oil filler cap were rusted away!!!

what a night mare of connections on this motor....

I am swamped with the thought of all those devices on the transom will have to be rebuilt or replaced...the steering controls for the outdrive, the hydraulic pump and hoses for the trim...the starter and alternator...the carb the fuel pump... the outdrive and the gimbal mount( it has roots coming out of it....

Hey Bob I think you need to look for a doner boat with a 4.3 Mercruiser and scrap the 165.
