:confused:i have a 1988 force 50 and im trying to hook everything up. if i have the shift and throttle cable unhooked from the motor my control box goes into F/N/R and moves easy and smooth, but when i hook the cables to the motor and try to put the motor in foward gear or reverse its really hard and almost feels like i might break my crontrol box.. i do all this with the motor off (NOT RUNNING) cause im trying to get it all adjusted correct...any help would be great.

Try shifting the motor manually with out being hooked up to the control box. make sure it is shifting freely. if so sounds like your cables are binding for some reason. check the cables for a sharp bend when hooked up.

yeah i think its something binding up on the motor cause the cables are fine,im not sure how to fix this, i was thinking maybe someone over tightened the flywheel causing it to put pressure on the stator and trigger..idk

If you have the cables right you will need to have someone turning the prop to make it shift.
The motor needs to be running to shift correctly.
You need to make sure the unit is in dead neutral then make sure your shifter is in neutral. Then adjust the cable to neutral. Hook it up and try it again.J

Ok let me clear it up, it shifts fine. In and out of N,gear and its just the throttle that is stiff I even unhooked the cable on the motor and did it by hand and its hard, I ill post a pic of the way its setup, I'm thinkin it needs cleaned and greased and ima pull the flywheel to clean it up.. other than that I'm not real sure..

I had the same problem once. I had the cables hooked up improperly. Just a thought.

Re: ok, i need some help

ok so today i took the flywheel off, i believe the trigger is binding just a little.. its a $600 part if they still sold it. the trigger is held in by the stator and when all 4 bolts are snug its hard to move, and when they are finger tight it works good. does anyone know the torque spec's on the 4 bolts holding the stator on and what should i do?

the second pic is of the cage and the trigger sits in there, its starting to groove cause its metal on metal, thats where its binding a little. i cleaned and re-greased also but i still dont like it. should i lightly sand it with 220grit or something, any help greatly appreciated

Re: ok, i need some help

I have the same engine..I haven't taken my flywheel off. My manual shows that the stator is held on by 4 allen screws..and the flywheel is spec'ed at 80 FT lbs. They don't list specs for the stator or trigger..hope this helps, hopefully someone with more experience replies to you. Good luck, My engine is a *****!..one thing after another.

I had hard throttle movement in my outboard..those plastic us marine controls are junk btw. My problem was the slightest of kinks in the throttle advance cable! I thought my was good too..just sayin...
