Getting a 98 proline 251 which says it has a 17" draft. Trying to research "draft" it seems like that is the depth that the boat will be in the water...so only 17". What do they mean by 17" draft??

Thanks

Joe

That would be correct. I dont think the draft statistic includes how far your outdrive extends below the bottom of the boat though.

Draft is the depth in the water of the hull, it does not include the amount the LU or outdrive extends below the surface of the water...

Wow 17" seems low...does that mean I'll get on plane faster..haha. Kidding. I just always thought a boat sat much deeper in the water. Lots to learn I guess.

The more deadrise a hull has, the more draft it will have. Your boat is probably not a deep V hull.

hmmm thats new to me also. So if my boat drafts 28 inches not including my prop then its no wonder i get stuck at low tide with a mean low tide of 3 foot.

My hull draft is 18-19" with the drive up, about 36" with it full down. It's important for me to know as we anchor off the beach at Kismet (Fire Island) often and wade in to spend the day there. Normal tide swing is about a foot. If I go to Democrat Point (just inside the Fire Island Inlet), the swing is more extreme- 2+ feet between mean low and high tides.

At low tide I can back in to about 2' of water at the stern.

I always need to check the local tide tables before we set out for any specific destination.

IMO, it's very important to know your stern drive up and down depths to prevent getting yourself into a situation where your traveling into waters without enough depth. I have a 19" stern drive up and 37" stern drive down depth. You can probably find this information for your boat online.
