New gauge - grounded it pegs out. New sender it test out. Cleaned thermostat housing new gasket with rivets. Motor runs good temp everything is good with IR tester. Gauge will only read after engine has been turned off and key is on run position. As soon as motor starts temp falls fast and never reads again while motor is running

Does the engine have a thermostat installed?

For laughs and giggle (I can't use the real term here, the nannyware *** it out)... temporarily put a wire from the body of the sender to the engine block.... If that doesn't help, check you have a good ground and a good +12volts on the back of the gauge....

Is there teflon tape on the sender threads? If so, remove all traces of the tape and use a pipe sealant like permatex hitac. The teflon tape will work as an insulator.

Maybe a crappy wire connection. Clean each connection and use a dab of grease on each connection to help block out corrosion.

Check ground condition at gauge. May be that it works because when key on engine off it pulls ground through other gauges, when running it doesnt
