Re: OK.. Tell on yourself..

OK didnt do anything to the boat but to myself while on the boat.... Was anchored on the flats this past weekend at a local spot, place to go swimming and just lounge around.... my buddy was in the water on the starboard side standing in about 4 feet of water... and I was in a goofy mood so I ran and jumped into the water on the port side.... no realizing the boat had swung a little bit toward the shallows and yup you guessed it... about a foot deep. landed on my feet and my left ankle goes SNAP!!!!! broke it!!! now in a cast for 8 weeks... no more swimming this year for me.... but the boating will not stop... lesson learned? Dont jump into the water until you check depth first. hows that for a stupid human trick??

Re: OK.. Tell on yourself..

Several years ago I decided that I just could not live without a jet ski. I was obsessed with them, and it seemed that every truck around here was pulling one or two behind it. So, I found what I thought was really good deal, two jet skis with a trailer for 1500 (one of them needed a new motor). I drove from Pensacola to Orlando to pick them up. I got them home and regestered and headed for the river. After going through the novice antics of trying to get the good ski in the water and parking the truck I was off! I climbed on, hit starter, a turned it over till the battery died. The motor didn't even attempt to start, which was odd because it started fine at the house before I headed for the river, and again when I got home. I took it to a repair shop and paid over a hundred bucks to get the carbs adjusted, and headed back to the river. This time I took my wife with me. Now she was against the whole idea of haveing a jet ski, she could not swim, and had a generally dim view of the whole idea of flying around on the water on these small contraptions. I figured that she would have so much fun with me that I could win her over to the PWC's, right? Well, we got it in the water, put on PFD's and off we went. She was holding on to me with a death grip, and that worried look never really left beautiful visage. So anyhoo, we're tooling around the river, and to help her relax I told here that I'd show her how stable these things are. So I guided it left and then right and that darn thing did a pitch, a roll and 180 spin and stopped. The motor was idleing for a second and it quit. Then things got really interesting, my wife is asking what the hell just happened, why did I do that, will the engine start back up, and will I take her directly to the boat ramp. It was about this time that I realized that these little craft have a nice center of gravity with one rider, but two riders made it top heavey. That explains why, without any notice, the jet ski violently rolled to port at an astonishing speed, throughing my lovely wife and I several feet from the ski, head first into the water. NOT GOOD!!!! is what I was thinking as I broke the surface, spuddering and dazed. My wife popped up and I knew immediately that all was not well with her. Her PFD was keeping her afloat, but it was ill fitted and she was sagging down, like she could slip out if held her arms up. Oh, by the way, she was absolutly terrified. We swam to the jet ski and I managed to board from the rear of the craft without any trouble. She was not strong enough to pull herself up, so I somehow hoisted her up behind me. Just as I got plugged in and was about fire up the engine, BAM!!!! the little POS through us BACK IN THE WATER. Oh my dear sweet Lord I prayed as I came up again, sputtering and feeling thoroughly stupid. By this time my wife is fighting off total panic, and I was sure that any second she would climb up on top of my head like a cat. We again swim to the jet ski, and this time I help her aboard first. By this time her state was such that I practically had lift her bodily out of the river onto the ski while treading water! Don't ask me how I did it. I climbed aboard with the last of my strength, and we were sort of acting like two soldiers standing a land mine, trying very hard not to set it off. I very gently eased the plug into the trip switch and started the motor. Success!! Croutching down so that the CG was low enough so the **** thing wouldn't throw us back in the river, I eased on the throttle. We started moving, I was steering from the rear and my wife had resumed her death grip, this time on the seat. I probably said I was sorry a thousand times on the way back to the ramp, she said it was OK, just to get her the hell off the river- post haste. The ride home was silent. The jet skis were put up for sale. The rest is history. At least our first ride on our first boat was dry, but no more confidence inspiring than our jet ski debacle. I'll post that one latter.

Re: OK.. Tell on yourself..

All good posts BTW

fishhunter911
Oh wow like Ralph said I feel for ya!
This all took place in the summer of 1967 when staying
with a Aunt and Uncle and my older cousins who were like
idols to all of us younger kids

BTDT fishhunter911 ! When I was 15 years old
we had just finished a day of water skiing on a little lake
on the Oregon coast, the boat dock was about 20 feet
from shore with a little walk out to it. I dove from the boat
dock to swim to shore YUP
about 1 foot of water… picked gravel out of my skin for
the rest of that summer!

Later towards the end of summer on the same lake we
Were using one of the canvas covered ski floats towards
the middle of the lake. Again with my same two cousins
They were like 22 and 24 and had brought their girl friends
along with their 15-16 old sisters :) (yes they knew how to
make their younger cousins whorship them) It was a even
better than great day.. as one of the best skiers on the lake I had
really been showing off all day! Then both Jim and Scott
did something I had never seen before.. When they let go of
the rope and skied up to the float.. instead of coming to a
rest and putting their hands on the float they just sat down!
Well not be be out done and I was up next. So after a couple
laps I let go and did the same thing… except having never
tried this before I was going WAY to fast and as soon as I
sat down I was immediately slamed on my right side, then
started doing backwards summersaults, heard the wood ski
Snap, and felt skin coming off everwhere on that canvas!
Well to add insult to injury.. just I thought it was going to be my
last roll as I slowed down… I came upright and YUP was at
the end of the float and went right over backwards again
splashing back into the lake

Hope that makes ur foot feel better! :)

Link

Skiing .. yea I use to be able to let go of the rope and ski parallel to the dock , just before starting to sink plant my hands on the dock and jump out of the skis and end up on the dock standing ... until dad repainted the dock with glossy paint ...swwwoooooshhhhh .. clunk.

Bad day at the boat ramp .. water cop was in the parking lot and saw I had forgotten to put on the trailer Licence sticker. was good and only gave a warning.. backed the boat in and pulled it aside. Parked the truck .. came back .. turned the key.. nothing , forgot the battery .. went and took it out of the truck .. got back to the boat water 6 inches over the floor.. forgot the plug... Fired it up figuring that I would run the water out of it, cause the bilge was not working.. pulled out,, prop hit a big rock and took a chunk out if it.. oh yea and as my wife held the boat against the loading dock wall .. she held it nice and tight.. gouges in the gelcoat. I DO NOT GO TO THAT LAKE ANY MORE.

Flying Boat.....Went surfing about 5 miles up the coast with some freinds in a 15 ft ply boat. On the way home we had to go around the back of a bar and I cut it too fine and we were in the impact zone as a set started to build. I headed for the horizin with the four of us sitting on the sides of the boat and planing. The swells kept coming and getting bigger each wave, we hit one wave and drove up the face still planing and get air, big unplanned air, the boys all braced themselves for a landing and bang we hit the water and because we were all sitting on the sides of the boat, the bottom of the boat stopped and the sides kept going down. I have never seen a boat go into that shape b4. I looked at three faces all with the same look of dissbelief and disstrust glaring in my direction. The boat was very flexable and getting rather moist, not sinking just sought of wet from places I dont think water should be coming from. We made it to shore but it was that vessles last major voyage.

As a teenager we used to ski almost every weekend, in the summer.

This time we had a boat load. Mostly girls, of course, we were obliged to impress.

My trick was to come into shore and simply step out of the skis, never even getting my hair or swim suit wet.

Well, one time I came in a little "too hot".
My skis hit the sand and I was still moving along pretty good. My footprints were fifteen feet apart until I tripped and landed in a patch of sand burs.

Very uncool!

All was OK. I ended up marrying one of those girls. Still am married to her. She likes to remind of that stunt, from time to time.

djohns... Your killin me, 15 feet apart I can almost see you!

Far from the worst but launching the boat this evening went through the usal routine of backing the boat off the trailer kill the engine and as it glides past the cleat on the dock I grab my bow rope and step onto the dock. well tonight I was about 12 inches further away from dock than usal and with 1 foot over the rail I hesitated. Wrong move...I guess my center of gravity was already over, down I went clinging to the rail with my arse just inches from the water. I was able to climb back in without taking a dunk but my leg is kinda sore where it caught the rail. Guess I'll look before stepping out of the boat next time. Live and learn i guess.

forgot plug - not yet
left motor down while taking out - guilty
left trolling battery on the charger (at the house) - guilty
didn't engage winch anti-reverse lock - guilty (lucky that I had attached the chain).
dropped the trailer off the ball just after hooking up - guilty (good thing the towing chains were hooked up and I wasn't going more than 2 mph)
left tow rope at the house when on a tubing trip - guilty
lost a body-glove ski vest out of the boat while towing - guilty (the kind person following me stopped and picked it up, then drove right on by while I was running back to pick it up)

So far these 'lessons' haven't cost me much (other than the lost ski vest).
