OK I know this is a stupid question, but does this hurt anything? Boat is in the salt. I will be doing a lot of prop work this spring on my IO and it would be nice to not have to haul the boat for every swap.

Thanks,
Mike.

Sure, but be carefull not to drop the nut, cotter pin and the spacer ring!1 beleave me youl never find them in the sand. Might be a good thing to have spares, just in case

Take a tub of cup grease with you and put the grease on the prop spline before you dunk it.

Mark

Re: ok to change prop underwater?

I was diving a couple of weeks ago. Found an aluminum prop in 40' of water. Couldn't figure out any reason for it to be there (hub was fully intact) other than someone was changing props underwater!!!

Next day, found an anchor, chain, and 100' of rope!

Ok, what about this: The goy got his prop tangled up in his anchor rope (maybe trying to trip it loose) and had to pull the prop to get it untangled and fumbled around and dropped the prop in the process?????

I saw a Sea Ray Jet boat (Big boat in the early days of jets) with the ski rope tangled up in the impeller. They had to get a tow to the trailer and take it home as they couldn't get it untangled.

Mark

I've had to do it, you can tie your wrench to a line of some sort, and I would bring extra prop nuts, cotter pins and any other hardware you need. In salt water use OMC triple guard grease on the splines, the stuff is great, when I remove the prop each year the grease looks new. Maybe also bring a block of wood to put between the prop and the cav plate to keep the prop from turning. Main thing is hope no one throws off a big wake when you are doing this job!
