Depends. Some have water pumps, some do not. Those with water pumps should NEVER be run out of the water. The others can be run for a few minutes, but the exhaust tube will get stinking hot. That heat travels upward to the powerhead and overheats it too---just as if it were sitting on a hot stove.
Look for a forward-pointing tube just aft of the propeller. If it has one of those (ram tubes), it does not have a water pump. BUT it depends on prop wash and forward motion through the water in order to operate.
Short answer---don't run it out of the water (and on a boat--with propeller) and you won't have any trouble
