As this is an air cooled engine can I run it out of the water? How does the cooling system for the leg work - i have no propellor on (broken) does this force water up the pipe for cooling?

Thank you,

Depends. Some have water pumps, some do not. Those with water pumps should NEVER be run out of the water. The others can be run for a few minutes, but the exhaust tube will get stinking hot. That heat travels upward to the powerhead and overheats it too---just as if it were sitting on a hot stove.

Look for a forward-pointing tube just aft of the propeller. If it has one of those (ram tubes), it does not have a water pump. BUT it depends on prop wash and forward motion through the water in order to operate.

Short answer---don't run it out of the water (and on a boat--with propeller) and you won't have any trouble

thanks, it has a little pipe bent to face prop so assume it is a ram tube type - I probably only ran it for less than a minute just to confirm it would run so should be ok - still looking for a prop for this motor so if anyone sees one for sale please let me know.

Yep, that's the ram tube. The best kind, if I may say so. I am assuming your motor was made by Chrysler, so include that brand in your search. Also Sears / Elgin. Tons of Sears' branded ones were built.

great info! never even thought those air cooled motors needed any water! ram tubes work well tho, i have two small motors (3.5 cc) that are water cooled and use the same principle from surfacing props.
