Therms back in along with water pump and running fine so far. What a job the therms are on this engine. Not on top like normal. Water pump was no walk in the park either but its done.

Thanks to all who helped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try removing the cylinder head cover and check the water passages in the cylinder head for blockage. This is common in salt water. If the passages are blocked I suggest doing the other side too.

Thermostats, "deflectors", and bypass valves are in short order. You have to pull the head and covers for "deflectors".

Zeph/fleetwin,
I'm back to running hot again after a long test (30 min) up to 200deg on 1&3 bank
I'm going to pull head covers and check deflectors. Are we sure it's just covers and not the heads that need to come off? Parts guy led me t believe it was heads but he may be trying to sell more gaskets lol. I need the deflector too. Just a special piece of rubber tube right?

Well, I kinda think it's water passages that have restrictions All should be checked and cleared out good.

Yup deflectors, headgaskets, thermostats and impellar ............ I have been down the same exact road with my V-4 and now it runs like a champ at even temperatures.

While I had pulled the heads I had also cleaned the passages with a small metal brush

When you had the thermostats out, what did the pressure relief valves and spring look like? These valves will stick in the rubber grommet. You remove the grommets clean hole in block, replace grommet. Valves should slide in and out very easy, if not sand or trim the 3 sides of the valves until easy fit. You can see the grooves in the old grommet where the valves stick.

Cylinder head must be removed to replace the water defectors.

rel. valves fell out actually so they were not stuck and I swapped therms. w/ no help so I'm looking at deflectors I guess. Need gaskets before I pull heads as I don't want any rust or corrosion to start on surfaces waiting on gaskets. should have them Monday.
Thanks

Pull the heads and oil down the cyls. You won't get anymore corrosion with the mtr not running. That way you can check the deflectors and order parts if needed.

OK I got head on stbd side cyl 1&3 number 3 looks like it was running hot and poss getting water. Deflectors look pretty squashed.
Should I worry about cyl 3 or assume deflector and new gasket will fix problem? Oh and I cant get head cover off. Afraid I'm gonna damage something. I'm tempted to leave in placebut wanted to check more water passages if they are behind cover. All bolts came out easy btw. Didnt eaven get my hands dirty!

Got head cover off and water passages were clogged with fine white sand. I did have to back off a beach one time and prev. owner could have been in sand as well.
Got it all cleaned and sprayed down w WD40 as the humidity is 150%. My plan is to run for a while and then do other side. It wasn't that difficult now that I have done it.
I had some pics but they wont upload.

The head gasket may cure that water issue. However, you should keep an eye on cyl 3 after you get it back together. Always possible that you have another issue: an exhaust manifold gasket leaking water into the exhaust chest. When that happens, exhaust pressure can force water back into the lower cyls....

As long as you've gone this far, get the head cover off and check those passages. Pull the head and cover for 2 & 4 also and check those deflectors. A good sharp putty knief and some heat should do it. I've heard of those head cover passages also causing an overheat prob.

That water deflector between the cyls is defineatly bad. Should check the other side also.

They are on the menu. See what I mean about hardly getting my hands dirty? Engine is like factory new clean... outside anyway. It's almost a pleasure to work on. really

Wehew!!!!!!!!!:D
All is well on the special! Got my head and cover gaskets and water deflectors for the water jacket and problem solved!!!! Running at 150 deg. all day! I'm happy with that.

Thanks Zeph, boobie, clanton, and all others who contributed to solving this issue. We started from the bottom up and finally got it on the last possibility. At least I know I've got an entirely rebuilt cooling system!!!
