HELP!! im replacing the impeller in my 85 force. I slid the impeller onto the driveshaft, lined up the key with the keyway, and according to the book, pushed the top housing down onto the impeller while turning the driveshaft clockwise. The problem is the impeller looks to be wider than the housing and the housing wont seat all the way down. I've verified the part # a few times and I do have the correct impeller. Any views would help.. Thanks

It would be easier to tell where you are at if you give us the model number or horsepower. And wouldn't hurt to give us the part number.
Just a guess there may be a top and bottom and maybe it is upside down and will seat better flipped over.

You are doing it correctly. The impeller is always bigger than the housing it goes in. Put a little dish soap on the impeller vanes and housing. It should slip in with a little persuasion...

By wider you mean it is to thick top to bottom? Some of the search engines on different marine web sites will give an incorrect part number for an impeller and it is possible you have the wrong one. Is the new one thicker then the old one you removed? As mentioned you need to post your model number and the part number for the one you got.

As our fleet admiral mentioned, add some liquid soap to the impeller vanes and the housing. I found that it is also usually easier to install the impeller into the housing before sliding the housing onto the shaft. Just leave yourself a little room before placing the housing onto it's base to install the impeller shaft key. Just be certain that you have given the impeller the correct turn in direction so the vanes of the impeller have the proper bend in direction to them before sliding the impeller and housing onto the shaft. Otherwise, you could end up destroying the impeller the very first time you go to start the motor.

The OB is a 85 force 85HP Engine. The part number on the wrong impeller i have is 18-3017, it is a Sierra part. The model # on my engine is 856F5A. Well it looks like I had the incorrect impeller after all. The new one was slightly wider than the old one. The funny thing is, I have checked many different web sites and they were all giving me the part # that I had. I'm not sure what to do now. I purchased a subscription to Seloc online so I could do this and other procedures and they have a parts list for this engine. IT IS THE WRONG ONE AS WELL lol... You would figure Seloc could at least get it right....

Order one from Mercury part number 47-803630T cost is $17. Max rules shows for a 85 A,B,C,E lower unit the correct impeller is a 3065. For a 85 D,F,G, H it is the 3017. My guess is if the 3017 dont work the 3065 will. Also all 85 lower units from 79 to 85 use the 3065 and your motor is from 1985
