12 Footer is right on, but Id add another Kirk Douglass film "The Vikings", and summarize by referencing all the Kubrick films including AI.

Those of you who have seen "Empire of the Sun", what was your inpression of it?
It made this grown man CRY at the very end. And any movie that can move me like that, deserves an honorable mention :)

Id forgotton about Blade Runner (Scoop), and though you could call it a b movie, Road Warrior was great.

Re: Okay here goes... Best movie ever

I have to agree with SCO, The Road Warrior is a good entertaining movie.

I feel there are movies that are great movies that are definitely well made classics.

There are bad movies that are bad in every sense of the word even if they had a lot of money poured into them.

Then there are the movies that are just plain fun. They will never be considered great, they would never be called works of art, but they are fun to watch. These vary between people. I watch a lot of movies over and over again, just because they are fun. Repo Man and Revenge of the Nerds, will never be classics, and a lot of people may not even like them, but they are fun movies to watch.

I put the Road Warrior, The Road Warrior Beyond Thunderdome, and Galaxy Quest in with that group also.

The original Highlander movie is in this group for me. Yeah, if I was a critic, I could rip the movie to shreds. I could say that the camera work is too "MTV" in some instances and trying to be too artsy in the others, but it works. The story is not deep, the acting is not great, but the movie is fun.

To me, movies are like photos. They elicit emotional responses and take us to a place we want to be and make us feel relaxed, excited, etc. They evoke thoughts and feelings. OK, maybe I'm being too "unmanly", but next time you go to a movie like Saving Private Ryan, really think about how you feel when you get out of the movie.
It was an experience that was shared by everyone that went to that movie. My wife never wants to se it again and cried all the way home. I am glad I experienced the movie on the big screen and own it on DVD to be watched once a year. I am glad movie are again being made for the theater environment, but come out on DVD later.

The abyss(sp) was good also, but really, anything with my little buddies in it is a great movie.

Yea.. 2 gay cowboys. You know it has to be complete fiction, as there is no such thing as a gay cowboy. Just ask John Wayne. :D

I didn't know Mad Max was an Aussie movie. Always liked that one.

Re: Okay here goes... Best movie ever

I don't think I have any single favorite movie, but there's a list of those I thought were excellent...
1. The Patriot
2. Slingblade
3. Lonesome Dove
4. Life as a House
5. Monsters, Inc.
6. Braveheart
7. Dances with Wolves
8. Seabiscuit
9. The Shawshank Redemption
10. The Green Mile

I could probably list more, but those are the ones that are easiest to recall at the moment.

Anyone who hasn't seen Monsters, Inc., and thinks it's just a kids' movie, you need to see it. Another kids' movie I enjoyed was The Lion King, and in fact that was the kids' movie that reintroduced me to the genre. My wife and I both are kids' movies fans, and have a lot of them on DVD, like Shrek, Polar Express, and others. Give 'em a look!
