Re: Okay more probles...

Don,

Went to Sears on my lunch break and took a look at those bolt removers. I think it will work for the one remaing at the end with the rusted head but I am concerned about the two tips left in the block. Also, with the bolts the manifold is not loose, will i need to take the ol hammer and knock it loose from the block? Also, those tips are still in there so I am affraid I will do more damage but I don't know what else to do.

Another question, when I get new risers and manifolds, do I need a sealent for the gasket or are the dry fit? I am guessing I need to do prep work like sand, and use rubbing alcohol to prep the surfaces correct?

Things just keep popping in my head? Going to do a compression test as well, what should the compression range be on this motor do be labeled okay?

Btw, I want to thank you all for your replies. I have worked on cars often but I have never wrenched on an i/o. With your help, I have almost got my risers, and manifold off and I believe we may have the problem narrowed down. This as you all know would have cost me quite a bit at the mechanic shop. Anyway, thanks. I am learning boating is a great hobby but the only way to keep yourself from going broke is to learn to wrench on your own... :D

I will keep you posted once I get the manifold off.

Update 4

Okay - Don, went to Sears got those rusty bolt removers and it worked wonderfully on the last remaining bolt. Attempted to used them on the broken 2 still in the block and I couldn't get those darn things to budge. WD-40 the hell out of them and took my universal all purpose tool the hammer and tried to loosen them up more and apply vice grips, still can't get the 2 broken tips out. Anyway sprayed more WD in there and am going to let it sit. Any new ideas to getting them out please let me know.

The good news is the manifold is off and the riser and you can tell this has been leaking. Good news as well, I looked for any cracks in the block where the manifold attaches and nothing lookes pretty clean other than some rust. Question, since I am the king of jerry rigging things, if I can't get those last two tips out can i just used the other bolts and bolt a new manifold up with any issues?

Bad news, you can see slight rusting inside the valves (I think) in the heads. I sprayed WD in there as well just to get something other than water inside the valves. I am on a tight budget and I am planning on leaving it as is until I have a few more dollars for a rebuild. I just hope with new parts and I can get running and get her hot to brun off any additonal water in there.

I believe this is the main source (bad riser and manifold) to my problem and I am hoping once I get a new manifol and riser and fire her up things will be okay. Althought I don't know and seeing the little rust makes me worried. I have attached updated additonal pictures of the block. Let me know your thoughts. Okay, been looking on ebay what part numbers am I looking for I am looknig for a complete kit.

WD 40 is worthless as a penetrating oil, use Kroil (hard to find) or PB Blaster (everywhere) and let them soak, spary, soak, etc.

No, you CAN'T just use the bolts that are let and be good to go. They put all of them on there for a reason.

Re: Okay more probles...

sounds like time to:
Use a drill and extractor, or a torch.
If you can't get a good angle on it with a drill; tow it to a machine shop and have them torch it out. (It takes some experience and finnesse)

+1 on the Kroil. google it, you can get two 16.5 oz cans shipped to you for $16.

PB blaster yo can find at walmart.

Re: Okay more probles...

Hey guys - about to order some parts. Okay, where is the cheapest place to get a riser and manifold? I need the bolts and gaskets as well. Also, do I need a 4' or 3' riser kit? Also is there a way to choose the left or right side so the mounting holes line up?? FYI - got some PB Blaster... I hope it helps.

Thanks for you help.
