My son recently purchased this boat. It has a 1987 Mercruiser 3.0 in it, but the previous owner replaced the sterndrive with a much older 160hp unit as shown in this pic. The issue is with shifting. He ran the boat without a reverse and told us the shift cable needed extended 1/2" as it was the wrong cable for the drive unit. I've searched all over trying to find if the 160 used a different cable maybe due to shaft length or something.
As it is, we mocked up a quick extension for the shift cable and it does indeed shift fwd/neu/rev now. When we first received the boat, the brass barrel on the shift cable was nowhere near the 6" recommended length. In fact, it was screwed all the way to the back of the threads.
Before we go into a bunch of further adjusting/trial & error I was hoping to find out if this was even going to work or if indeed we need a different cable somewhere.
Edit: should also note: we adjusted brass barrel of shift cable to 6" length prior to mock up extension, and fwd/neu only. No reverse.
