Old 160 sterndrive mated to Alpha 1 Cable question

My son recently purchased this boat. It has a 1987 Mercruiser 3.0 in it, but the previous owner replaced the sterndrive with a much older 160hp unit as shown in this pic. The issue is with shifting. He ran the boat without a reverse and told us the shift cable needed extended 1/2" as it was the wrong cable for the drive unit. I've searched all over trying to find if the 160 used a different cable maybe due to shaft length or something.
As it is, we mocked up a quick extension for the shift cable and it does indeed shift fwd/neu/rev now. When we first received the boat, the brass barrel on the shift cable was nowhere near the 6" recommended length. In fact, it was screwed all the way to the back of the threads.

Before we go into a bunch of further adjusting/trial & error I was hoping to find out if this was even going to work or if indeed we need a different cable somewhere.

Edit: should also note: we adjusted brass barrel of shift cable to 6" length prior to mock up extension, and fwd/neu only. No reverse.

The cable comes in one size, period. I would pull the drive to check the play in the shift spool, can supply a link for that. Then verify you can shift the drive into fwd and reverse. I can post a video about the shifting and the linkage later.
To remove the drive ,shift into fwd. the prop should be locked turning it CCW, remove the rams and 6 nuts and it should just pop right off.

Thanks BT. Sorry for the delay. Thread subscription not working apparently. I'll see if we can tackle that this weekend. I did some more fine tuning to the shift cable, and the control cable and checking measurements. It seems to lock in (hand test). Will hook it up to muffs and try with engine on.
Now that I know it's one cable size, I'll keep working on it and pull the drive if needed.
Thank you.

save your time, If the PO cut the cable at all it wont adjust. pull the drive and install a new cable .
I would acquire a old control cable core( not a shift cable core) to act as a guide when you remove the old casing
