Hi All,
I'm new to the site and enjoy it very much.
I just bought a 64 Glasspar with a old merc on it. They say it ran the last time they used it which was 7 years ago. I've greased all the fittings and also changed the oil in the lower unit. I did find water in it and no oil so that's something i'll check into later. I just what to see if it will run. I also put some lubricant in the cylinders a couple of times. The engine turns over easily with the plus out. I bought a new fuel tank and hose and the next thing I want to do is flush the fuel lines. I think I'll try to start it without doing anything to the carbs or fuel pumps just yet. I'm hoping it will start and run a little bit and then I'll do a compress check and see if it's worth spending good money on a old motor. This boat would be a little underpowered with a 65 but would be good enough for now. A couple of questions for ya.
1. Can you recommend a good manual for this motor?
2. What spark plugs does it use?
3. Any goods or bads about this motor.
4. What should the compression be?
5. Any other idea's before I try to start it?
6. serial # is 1712163

Thank You,
Just checking it out to make sure it's not junk before the 70 dollar manual. I hope to start it this week.

Hi Mike,

Do you still have the 1964 Mercury 650, did you get it running OK?

I just picked up a 14' fiberglass boat with a 64 Merc 650 pretty cheap. The previous owner said it had not run in a few years but he preped it for storage before he put it away. I have not attempted to start it yet.

If you still have your 650, do you have any recommendations prior to starting? I do do not want to sink a lot of $$$ into it if it has too many issues.

Thanks

Todd
