Re: Old 40hp evinrude

What type of weight of gear oil you guys run? Also i removed the screw that we earlier talked about concerning the shifting dog. With the screw removed it will go in all 3 gear and with the screw in all the way it only go into forward and neutral. When trying to go into reverse there is some sort of plate that comes up? could it be that something has falling in place?

The pin goes through a hole in the piece of metal that you see moving around.

Any help!, when screw is out it goes into all the gears but when its in it only goes in forward and neutral.

When the screw is out and I put it in reverse it looks like theres some sort of plate that comes up. Is everything out of whack?

Got a pic of the plate? Are you talking about the shifter lock? Stops you from revving the motor in reverse all the way as opposed to forward?

I don't think you will ever get the shifter lever pivot pin back in place unless the motor's laying on its side. Gravity won't be your friend otherwise.

Be sure to look at the online parts diagram and zoom in to see exactly what you are trying to do with the pin, once you move the shifter lever to the screw hole center. I would not make any more attempts to shift until the pin is properly in place ... you will see from the diagram why you're wasting your time.

I agree with this. The whole is there. Yes, the shifter will move and look like a plate. You need to find the hole to re align. If you cant do it vertically, you will have to do it horizontally. If neither, you will have to disassemble. But you should be able to do it.

Re: Old 40hp evinrude

Sorry for such a long delay, I fixed it and put the motor away in storage. It seemed to go into gear good once I got the screw in. Took some screwing around but it eventually went in. I'm still trying to figure out the year of the motor tho, here the number again 40354d.....Also the motor screams wide open but sputters real bad at any other throttle level, carb needs a good cleaning? anything else?

Actually, it wasn't the year I was refering too. It was re-aligning the shift fork with the phillips screw on the lower unit.:D:D:D
