I second that. Its a lot easier to drill if you centre punch the bolt and its easy to centre punch dead centre of the bolt if you can use the hole in the head as a guide.

I've never used hardware store bolts on the head, but I've seen motors with them. If I was being honest and the motor was meant to be a runner not a show piece then I'd just buy a new bolt at the hardware store.

Yeah, thats probably what im gonna do, just run down to ace hardware down the road. If I have to drill out the bolt, how big of a drill bit do I use?

That's personal preference. Some folks try to do it all at once and use a drill bit just smaller than the hole in the head. I like to drill a couple holes. One small hole to use as the pilot and then redrill with one or two successively larger drill bits. I take my time and use a drill press.

Depending on how the bolt is broken I have also used a drill bit the size of the hole placed through the head and drilled just deep enough to give a nice deep V in the top of the bolt that will allow a smaller bit to drill dead centre.

Well, I got the bolt replaced today. There was just enough sticking out to put a pair of vice grips on, but I didnt even need those. It was finger loose, so I used needle nose pliers to get it out to the point where I could use my fingers. Its back to missing though, I think next ill replace the spark plug wires. After that, im not sure where to go.

Just wondering, when replacing the head gasket on this engine, do you put the gasket on dry, or use some kind of compound?
