Dang, this is scary. I don't recall what your previous boating experience or what motivated you to get into boating. Whatever that was I sure hope your wife catches the bug. Boating needs to be a way of life for it to work easily. Good luck! And I mean that with no sarcasm whatsoever :)

You are absolutely right about that. My ex-wife didn't like boating, my current wife does. Trust me; it's MUCH better if your better half is "on board" with this.

First thing you need to do is 'promote' your 'wife' to 'Admiral', then do some things to get her interested in boating. You will want to focus on having positive family experiences with the boat . . . that way the 'Admiral' will view it as more of a family thing.

Me too.

Edit: I like buying things that depreciate quickly used. And if there are a few diamonds that are priced like pebbles then even better. I have bought two SAABs for this reason. Loved them both. Great cars, and nobody believes it, so I get 'em cheap.

Cars and boats are a bit tough to compare here where the value proposition is concerned I think. For example, I am a value vehicle buyer. Find the absolute most undervalued, highest content, most capable vehicle for the money. I bought a $49,000 dollar, 4 year old SAAB for $13,500 dollars two years back with low miles. It was made when GM owned SAAB and so the Swedish SAABified a Chevy Trailblazer. It is nicer, more luxurious, and has a page of structural and body upgrades over the Trailblazer/Envoy and has a much nicer exterior look, taller rims, all sorts of stuff you get on euro cars plus a huge V8 engine, tv, nav, AWD, HID's. I don't think that same scenario exists in the boat world where barring unusual economic circumstances like a divorce, you get what you pay for. Buying the SAAB was the closest I've ever gotten to getting something for nothing in a normal marketplace. I don't think there is a SAAB equivalent boat that has the best of everything but none the less was shunned by the market.

By the way I still have one of those 1980's Bayliners and the only difference between why ours is still original pristine and few others are is not being lazy or careless. It got used as hard as any inland lake boat here in MN but got better care as we got it from the boatshow new.
