I have an older control box with 1 handle, 3 gear buttons, choke switch, and ignition, says selectric on it, I have no idea what year this control box is but it has a black plug on the end and I am trying to connect it with my newer motor
1987 28HP SPL Evinrude that has a red plug on the harness. The 2 plugs connect together but when I turn the key I just blow the 20amp fuse. I have looked at all the connections and they all look solid to me - nothing touching the block or something it shouldnt be touching and no frays. My ignition switch 4 connections on it and without taking it out I can see that one of them is labeled Ign for ignition so I dont think this switch uses the M M type scheme that I have scene on diagrams thus far. Also the wires are solid colors like red gray purple black so the diagrams I have scene don't apply to this switch.

Can I make this work? Where should I go from here?

No ... the control is for the really old electric shift motors (late 60's early 70's) and not compatible with your motor. You need a much newer control unit for mechanical shift (single lever) and will have a red plug, not black.

Yea, that old box was most likely used on the older 55hp Evinrude Triumph or something similar. Some of the 40 hp Larks, of the 60's used them too.

I have one of those Selectric control boxes for my 1971 Evinrude 50hp looper. Mine is kinda falling apart, so I could use a spare. If you are interested in selling it send my a PM.:)

the black harness will not work.

Thanks for that info TD.

Actually, the only part I really need is the lock out mechanism for the push button gear shift that prevents shifting when the throttle is forward. Presently I have a guard over the push buttons to prevent someone from inadvertantly leaning on it and smoking the gear box while under throttle.

I've seen several control boxes that have "Power Pilot" printed on the side-- is that something different, or can they be used on later model engines (up to '95) ?
