Old engine analyzer question

while looking in my dads garage i came across this analyzer, i knew he had it but i forgot about it (i have used it on my car once upon a time). after giving him a hard time for holding on to "old school" tools i realized it may be useful. i just got a new prop and am gonna be checking WOT rpm. i have only used it on cars. will it work on my 1975 mercury 402?

That looks to be an old Dwell/Tach device. Unless that Merc has points and a distributor and the device has a setting for the number of Merc engine cylinders, it will not read correctly. Also, I never heard of a Dwell specification for a Merc OB.

I am not sure of the other 8 functions, however, it is likely most will not be too useful.

Northern Tool & Equipment has a nice battery powered tach and hour meter for $40. It has worked well on my boat. Battery lasts for 3 to 4 years.

thanks for all the responses, i will look into getting that tach! it is this tach correct? i live in canada so to ship it here will cost me $40 extra dollars lol so i will locate one in town.


off topic but i am looking for WOT rpm when i put my new prop on. does anyone know off hand what that should be for a 1975 mercury 402? i have been looking with little luck

That tach might work if the outboard is a single cylinder or has a distributor. The tach might also work if you can select the number of cylinders that Mec does have. Barring that, it likely won't work

If your just looking for a tach,you might like this one.I bought one last summer and use it on all my engines,single cylinder up to eight cylinder.The inductive test lead is easy to connect and configure for any style engine,two stroke or four stroke.Hope this helps.

this is turning out to be kinda pricey for an old fishing boat lol, i live in canada so shipping anything is usually about 40 extra bucks for some reason. im trying to locate anything i can find in town but its tricky and when i do find its always pricey
