I have an old Evinrude 3.3 HP river motor. These motors are distinguished by the fact that the prop shaft is not at a 90 degree angle, very interesting looking motor. The model is 4423 and sn is 87525, I am unsure of the year, I have been told both 1936 and 1947 ? My question concerns a unique part of the motor. There is a chamber next to the exhaust port of the engine. This chamber is about 3/4 inch forward of the exhaust ports. The chamber is vented to the outside via a slide valve and tube that opens as the motor excelerates. What is the purpose of this chamber ? This is the only motor where I have seen such a chamber. Anybody know where I can get an owners or shop manual for this motor?

I have not run this motor for over 20 years, but it ran great 20 years ago before I put it away in the garage. I hope to restart it soon!

The model 4423 was made from 1947 to 1951, Capt.

I have no idea what that chamber is, so I will be very interested in the answer.

Good luck. :)

Re: Old Evinrude 3.3 HP river motor

Thank you JB and BoatBuoy for your information about my old 3.3 Evinrude river motor. I believe BoatBouy may be right about the unusal part being an exhaust pressure relief, it sure has made a dirty mess under the cowling. JB, if you have any interest in this item I can post a digital picture of the set up, it is rather unusal.

Thank you
Capt JB
