You can use hypoid gear oil in the gearcase. The old manuals only mention the use of the SAE 30 in case of an emergency. Stick with the hypoid though.

For oil, use any TCW3 oil of your choice, mixed at 16:1 Your fuel tank holds 7 pints, so mix accordingly.

Static settings for needles are 1 turn out from seated for high, and 3/4 out from seated for low. (yeah backwards from most)

To start it:

Fully open fuel valve
Turn dial to COLD START position
Set spark lever at START position
Turn speed control grip on steering handle to START
Push primer 3 times, or 5 times in cold weather
Pull recoil until starts.
After starting, move fuel dial to RUN position
To run, you must move the spark advance lever, and throttle via tiller grip, in unison. To go fast, advance the spark lever, and throttle grip to FAST, etc...They are not synchronized like on other models.
To stop, there is a cut out button under the spark lever that is spring loaded, then turn fuel dial to SHUT OFF position

Thanks. I will do some more research on lower unit lubrication. I will possibly reach out to 1946zephyr.

OK, I looked it up. Fuel mix is 1/2 pint of oil per gallon. Modern TCW-3 oil may be ok, but you may want to consider using SAE 30 or 40 non-detergent as original. That would provide better sealing of powerhead parts. Some guys mix half TCW and half SAE 40. Gear lube is "Evinrude Gear Grease". Of course that is no longer available, so most guys use Lubriplate 105 "Motor Assembly Grease" from NAPA. It comes in a squeeze tube. Others use John Deere Corn Head Grease. Probably better stuff but not as convenient to get in.

Water pump is a two-stage centrifugal pump. Not sure if the impellers are metal or rubber. Both were used. Metal ones never wear out. The rubber ones are obsolete.

Angels fear that carburetor. Leave it alone unless you have good reason to go into it. If you find it is necessary, go ahead. You will learn some new cuss words.

Interesting motors, but I never had much love for them. But some people do. Takes all kinds of nuts to hold the world together.

EDIT: In all fairness, I need to apologize for the carburetor comments. I had another model in mind. Zephyr isn't THAT bad.

go on the antique outboard motor club site and ask. There are a couple of experts on those motors. Good motors when you get them fine tuned

The only year the zephyr had the weedless lower was 1949. Easy to tell a 49 model it turns 360 deg and has the angled fishing lower unit.
