Re: old evinrude

I can't find Docktalk at this site. I need to identify my outboard too. Thanks, Ron

You'll need to find your model number. It's either on the transom clamp on the nameplate, or it's on the welch plug on the engine itself (a dime sized silver disk). Then take it here or here. At the marinshopen site, find the Modellguide if you don't read Swedish.
Good luck!

Re: old evinrude

Thanks Paul, I found that my outboard is a 1961 10hp Sportwin. It was not used for 4 years. I rebuilt the carbureter. It now starts but idles rough and backfires a lot. If the backfire is big it will stop running. Sometimes it will keep running and suddenly speed up on it's own and stop running. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ron

Re: old evinrude

First, try setting your mixture. Joe Reeves explains how to do that here.
If it is sneezing, it indicates the engine is running lean. That could be caused by bad reeds or other crankcase sealing issue. Either that or something got missed while you were cleaning the carburator.
If the engine is missing/actually backfiring, that is probably a ignition coil issue. If they're cracked then they must be replaced since they arc over. Fortunetly they're cheap, and NAPA autoparts carries them. If the engine suddenly is picking up 50% more revs, this is most likely the problem.
If you don't have a manual, get one here or borrow one from the library. You probably will need to do a link&sync once the engine is running better.

Thanks again Paul. Super info I will try what you say. I don't want to give up on this baby. You say that I can get a service manual "here" could you explain more.

Re: old evinrude

Iboats sells them. Here is the list of Johnson/Evinrude ones. These are similair to Hanes automotive manuals and have lots of pictures and cover a few engines.
Original service manuals are printed by kencook.com, but they are pricey. If you want breakdowns, you'll need both the service and parts manuals. Sometimes you can find one on ebay quite a bit cheaper.
The original manuals are supposedly better, but my '64 original has only a little more information that my Seloc, and the Seloc is more useful for someone that's new to outboards.
