Old guy needs help with 15hp Yamaha

What did the shop say was the problem last time? It's probably the same thing. An impeller will lock up the engine. Or at least it will feel like it's locked up.

Test it yourself. Tilt the motor up, remove the spark plugs and squirt some fogging oil in the spark plug holes. Let it sit for a few days and see if it loosens up. If not, you'll have to go deeper.

Old guy needs help with 15hp Yamaha

Shortly after I stored my engine last year I found the engine frozen and was unable to pull it through. Several hundred dollars later I got the motor back from repair service with a new water pump( which had also been replaced the previous year). Two weeks ago I fogged the engine for storage and now again I find it frozen. Anyone have any ideas on why. it's a 1992 model which otherwise runs beautifully . Can respond by email also.
Best regards.

To make sure its the powerhead and not the lower gears..Drop the lower unit and then see if the flywheel will turn. If it does you have a gear or waterpump problem. You need to know which to chase your problem.

Agree with Trent. Didn't know if you wanted to tackle dropping the lower unit yourself. It's not bad on the little putts.

It is quite common on these for the tube containing the lower crankshaft seal to corrode inside which stops the driveshaft from turning. with the lower unit removed(may be difficult to remove) both the gearbox and motor should turm freely. if this is the case, remove the powerhead and check tube.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond. Last time the repairman was vague about the cause of the problem. He freed up the motor but in the two weeks that I waited before launching my boat, it was already getting very stiff. However, I was able to start it and things were fine until I put the motor in the garage. With my limited knowledge, I think Gregory may have pinpointed the cause. Corroded tube. Anybody want to buy a very clean looking motor?

I is was and ever shall be a Floridian, so I know nothing of proper winterization.
But if the lower unit has water in it,the temp drops low enough to freeze that water, you are done in most cases. Again, I'm no expert on such maters, but water does expand when it freezes, and everything that cannot expand with it, will expand in not so good ways.
