Could somebody please give me some info, if possible, on an old Johnson I'm looking at buying from a co-worker. The I.D. #'s are JW23A. I believe it's green and white in color, and it's a 3 horse. I'm just wondering what year, parts availability, care, etc. It will just be going on a canoe, but really needs to be reliable.

Your engine is a 1968 3hp Johnson. You should have no problem obtaining parts.

JW-23 3 = 1968

Good little motors. Parts are widely available for your motor. Oil mixture is 50:1. If you buy it, grab yourself a Manual and you will know everything you need to in order to maintain it...

I'll add one more:
web page

Great engine! :) Personally I would never run one at 50:1, although that is the official mix ratio for them. Check out the Oil Mix FAQ in the FAQ forum for details. As long as you take care of the water pump and ignition, it's reliability is beyond any reproach.

Tom's got a real good one there. :) Did you find the '52/'53 owner's manual?
I've been sort of putting together a 4hp one over at shareaproject: here.
